CLASFON Holds Academic Seminar

It was an inspirational, eye opening and soul lifting moment for attendees of the Academic Seminar organised by the Academic Unit of the Christian Law Student Fellowship Of Nigeria (CLASFON) on Friday, 15th of January, 2016. The event which held at the University of Benin, Faculty of Law, L.T 1 at about 3:00pm witnessed a massive turnout of Law students from all levels.

The speakers of the event Dr Ogbodo, a Lecturer of Environmental and Administrative Law, Dr Gabriel Arishe, a Constitutional Law lecturer and scholar, and Garrick Nosa John, President of the Law Students Association (LAWSA) of the University of Benin, imparted so much knowledge and inspirational to the attendees and left them full of confidence for the task ahead.

Dr Ogbodo who addressed the audience for half an hour on How To Answer Law Questions asserted that there is a lot of difference between the knowledge of the law that a person possesses, and how to transfer that knowledge into the examination booklet, and that it is important that a person knows the law and also show that he knows the law in an examination. He stated that he had seen people struggle with this problem and had thus developed passion for teaching people how to answer law questions, this passion drove him to write a book on the topic. He further proceeded to differentiate and explain the different types of law questions, and dissected properly the IRAC method before the audience.

Dr Gabriel Arishe who had nodded his head continuously in approval while his colleague delivered the lecture, spoke on the "3 Gs" and how to balance. He unveiled during the course of his teaching that the 3 Gs were God, the Gang and Grades, and that it was important to balance these important aspects in the life of a Christian student, the pursuit of part of the three and neglecting others could be detrimental. He stressed that God was the fountain of success and success with Him is guaranteed, without Him is not protected and long-lasting, using Joseph as a case study, who always succeeded because God was with him.
Clearing the air that 'Gangs' referred to the friends and company they keep, he stated that we all need helpers in life, Jesus had helpers. However while development can take place when you meet certain people, the erudite lecturer warned that they must learn to recognise toxic friendship and walk away before they are brought down.
Speaking on the importance of grades, he said grades tell how capable a person is in his chosen field of endeavour. He urged the attendees to be diligent if they were to succeed in their grades and put more effort, citing Daniel and his friends in Babylon. Dr Arishe concluded his hour long lecture by stating how to balance the 3 'Gs' which was to know priorities, allocate and manage time appropriately, having a working timetable or to do list which is adhered to and amended to accommodate contingencies, striving to cover lost ground, and imposition of self discipline.

President Garrick Nosa John who spoke on The Student and Politics, advised the seminar attendees also on the need to balance academic, religious and political activities. He said while pursuing a political position, it was important to put God first, and understand the purpose of such political position. He also admonished that they should learn to make positive declarations to themselves and their situations.

The event finally ended by 6:00pm. ULP caught up with some of the participants of the academic seminar to get feedback on the event.

Osaremwinda Eghosa in 200 level described the event as inspirational, motivational and an eye opener, which has definitely improved his [and other attendees'] lives.

Mercy from the 300level  class giving her feedback said "It was mind blowing, perhaps some people seeing the workload this semester might have been wondering how to overcome, I think they [the speakers] really broke it down to the barest minimum on how you can this. I am looking at my classes now and I feel its really possible to go through it, its really possible to come out of this Faculty with whatever grades you want despite what has been said about a lecturer or a particular course. Just like Dr Arishe said, you can always work towards it."

President of CLASFON UNIBEN, 'Papa' Agabi Emmanuel in his comments said, "We thank God it went well. The type of questions the speakers answered would have been ones that would solve a lot of problems. We know that answering law questions have been an issue for students because it is not taught [as a course in the Faculty], so whenever we have an avenue to organise an event like this we're really happy because we know that it will positively impact the grades of students. Even for the other areas today that were addressed, there are people who want to go into politics and at 300 level they make their worst GPs because they are campaigning and at times do not even get to make the required GPA to go into politics. So we thought we should address all these, and from my judgement I think it was really a huge success."
President of LAWSA UNIBEN, Garrick Nosa described the event with one adjective, 'PERFECT'. He remarked that the event was a stepping stone for the students to making their academic life better in the Faculty, most especially for the younger colleagues, and that he hoped he would hear of more of such programmes organised even after his departure from the Faculty

The Academic Secretary from whose office came the great vision for the occasion, Deborah Okpiaifoh was full of gratitude to God for a great and successful programme, saying that its purpose have been met. When asked on the possibility of organising more of these programmes, she replied that there will surely be more programmes from CLASFON, and from the Academic Unit.
